Bryan City Council Monday night approved a tax abatement deal for Spangler Candy Co. to help the company build a new sugar house for the main facility.
Spangler Candy Co. President Bill Martin said in a letter to city officials that the new building will house four stainless steel, 30,000 gallon sugar tanks and two similar tanks that will store corn syrup. Martin said the new tanks would increase the company’s storage capacity by 50%.
Martin also said there would be a significant purchase of new equipment with the project.
The total project cost, including construction of the new building and the equipment, is estimated at nearly $5 million. The tax abatement would be at 100% for 10 years.
Martin said the project would also create new jobs in the community.
“While it is difficult to exactly predict how many new jobs will be created, this much needed improvement replaces much older storage tanks with new and upgraded control systems,” Martin said in his letter. “It increases our operating capacity by nearly 50%, which means we will increase our production capability to produce candy from 200,000 pounds per day to nearly 300,000 pounds per day over the next 10 years.”
He added he expects jobs to grow by 100-150 over the next 10 years.
Martin also pointed to a safety aspect for the community as a whole once the project is complete in that trucks delivering ingredients will be able to pull in and drive straight through, unload ingredients and then drive out through a new gate to the west of the sugar house.
“This will avoid the pull-in and then back-up situations that all deliveries must do today, thereby creating a much safer delivery environment,” Martin said.
The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.
In a related matter, council also approved a work permit for the new building, which is listed as 3,200 square feet.
